The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is a not-for-profit corporation that operates three Federally Funded Research and Development Centers serving the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Unified Commands and Defense Agencies in addressing important national security issues, particularly those requiring scientific and technical expertise.
The Science and Technology Division (STD) provides scientific and engineering analyses related to DoD problems and/or proposed solutions. The Division conducts technical characterizations and evaluations of devices and systems, the environment in which they operate, the targets they engage, the missions they perform, and the personnel who must operate them. The Division also conducts technology assessments critical to planning and implementing research and development programs, supporting acquisition decisions, understanding foreign technology capability, and utilizing technology for individual and group training. STD staff fall into three job types: Research Staff Member - Full-time professionals with recent Ph.D. degrees or M.S. degrees with extensive experience. Generally involve work in a major collaborative role or as the task leader. Expected to be innovative, aggressive, and self-starting. Research Analyst - Full-time professionals who typically work closely with Research Staff Members in the analysis of experimental data and/or design of analytical simulations. Research Associate (2 year Term Appt.) - B.S. or M.S. in science or engineering with the intention of pursuing an advanced degree at the end of their term. Work generally involves collaboration with senior staff members with the expectation of creative, original contributions.
Job Requirements
All positions require knowledge of pure or applied sciences and technologies. All positions require the application of analytical skills to problems and issues involving the Armed Services and national defense systems. Diverse assignments are likely. Versatility and the ability to obtain a DoD Secret security clearance are essential. Current Science and Technology Division Openings Research Staff Members:
Ph.D. Electrical Engineering or Physics with strong background in electro-optics, technology and interest in military communication, remote sensing, and data fusion. Recent graduate through 10 years experience.
Ph.D. Physics with broad general experience - 5 or more years experience desirable, but not necessary.
Ph.D. Microbiology or Bioinformatics with Post Doctoral experience.
Research Analyst:
B.S. or M.S. (preferred) in the pure or applied sciences, including all fields of engineering. Strong technical computing background and interest a requirement.
B.S. or M.S. (preferred) in Physics or Electrical Engineering with emphasis on electromagnetism and a good knowledge of chemistry. Experience reviewing test plans and evaluating test data and reports preferred. Excellent writing skills are crucial.
