The Restoration Project Manager will be responsible for the organization and development of The company's vast multimedia holdings into a full-fledged, moving image, audio and photographic archive in accordance with national standards.
This entails, at first, overseeing the transfer and reformatting of our video and audio materials, onto long-term preservation formats. Other duties include the management and organization of our extensive multi-format video collection; cataloging, inventory; working with vendors; and providing access to the collection.
Required Background:
Extensive hands on film and videotape experience, particularly in a restoration and preservation environment, is a must. Technical knowledge of the various video and audio media, of new preservation formats, and digital media formats and of the video production environment, are a must.
Successfully demonstrated oral and written communication skills, including the ability to draft reports and maintain preservation records. Position requires hands-on technical expertise, as well as interpersonal skills, such as the ability to deal effectively with vendors, JEM staff, researchers and the general public.
Position also requires the ability to work independently and/or with others within the organization, keeping detailed preservation records; able to work well under pressure with accuracy and attention to detail.
The Project Manager will work with audio-visual materials including videotapes of all formats, audio of various formats, 16mm and 8mm film, processes materials, readying them for transfer and reformatting and working with vendors to carry out the restoration and preservation of the materials.
Assists with selection of films, videotape and audio for preservation. Inventories and assesses materials to decide restoration priorities and needs, assembles data for selection of works, coordinates schedules for sending materials out for preservation, inspects materials before and after restoration by vendors. Trouble-shoots film/video archive materials problems. Assists with grant proposals and implementation of grant projects.
After good workflow and proper systems have been established for the restoration project, the Project Manager may evolve into the role of Archivist/Curator. These would be some of the responsibilities involved:
Assess state of JEMs video archive and implement necessary changes to enable better use of the images.
Process and inventory new and existing collections.
Categorize existing tapes and choose appropriate software and methods for database and archival system.
Ensure footage is easily accessible for both internal and external use.
Make long and short term decisions about direction/practices of those working with the video archive.
Help establish and maintain an administrative system for the licensing and sale of footage.
Develop a database that will keep track of customer and payment information, and allow for the creation of licenses.
Ensure that the tools and methods of the archive system are kept up-to-date with current practices.
Develop proactive footage sales program.
Assist with licensing footage from the Archive.
