This is a professional position as the Branch Manager/Librarian at a neighborhood branch library. All library locations are within the Department of Branch Supervision. This Librarian II position assumes responsibility for all phases of operation for the branch.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this position. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position.
Manages the day-to-day operations of the Branch Library.
Supervises a staff of two or more Library Associates in the performance of their duties; evaluates staff performance.
Provides leadership and direction for staff and training for new staff.
Responsible for preparing monthly schedule and approving leave for staff.
Interprets and communicates library policies and procedures to staff and customers.
Handles customer complaints and requests with discretion and good judgment.
Resolves circulation problems and complex circulation situations.
Prepares and maintains required reports and records in a timely manner.
Assists with collection development, including weeding of the collection.
Assists with overseeing maintenance of buildings and grounds.
Submits recommendations to improve branch operations.
Develops local contacts to further the library’s function as a center for educational, cultural, and general reading and access to the Internet.
Plans and conducts programs for children and adults.
Provides reference and reader’s advisory assistance to customers.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of philosophy and techniques of public library service and trends in the library profession.
Knowledge of materials and online databases commonly included in public library collections.
Knowledge of management and supervisory practices.
Demonstrated knowledge of personal computers, office software, and Internet searching.
Excellent written and oral communications skills.
Analytical skills and reasoning ability to assess problems and to achieve and/or recommend solutions.
Ability to answer reference questions and provide reader’s advisory assistance.
Ability to conduct children’s story times and summer reading program activities.
Ability to supervise, evaluate, motivate, and train staff.
Ability to plan, organize, and direct the workflow of the branch.
Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with library customers and library staff in person, on the telephone, and by e-mail.
Ability to perform mathematical computations necessary to accept payment for overdue or lost materials.
Ability to use the library’s integrated library system and word processing.
Ability to operate a variety of computer programs.
Ability to operate a computer, copier, FAX machine, and standard office equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A Master’s Degree in Library Science (MSLS) from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association.
Bilingual written and oral communication skills in Spanish and English preferred.
SALARY RANGE
Jefferson parish offers a competitive benefit package, civil service protection salary starting at $32, 984.00 a year.
