JOB DESCRIPTION:
For over 100 years, Visiting Nurse Service of New York has provided critical home- and community-based health care services to residents of New York. Today we are the largest non-profit home health agency in the US, and are recognized nationally for the scope and innovation of our services. We deliver professional and paraprofessional services throughout all five boroughs of New York City and Nassau and Westchester Counties. Responsible for assisting in the development of research proposals,
implementation of research designs including data collection, entry and management, and preparation of reports. Works closely with Research Director and/or Research Associates in the development, design and implementation of research studies to expand knowledge of home health care issues, trends and technologies and health care policies. Works under
moderate supervision.
Prepares protocols and primary data collection instruments for studies of the management, cost and outcomes of home and community-based studies, as directed. Conducts literature searches (including computerized searches), retrieves articles, reviews for appropriateness of content and extracts relevant data and drafts literature review summary.
Coordinates activities of Research Interviewers and participates in direct data gathering activities using patient interviews and other methods for abstracting data from records, as directed.Coordinates meetings, panels and conferences, as requested, (e.g., locates suitable space, contacts speakers and/or participants, prepares materials for distribution, helps participants solve logistical problems, writes summaries of presentations and discussions). Participates in the preparation and submission of research proposals in response to Requests for Proposals (“RFP”) and to investigator initiated grants and contract opportunities by obtaining copies of funding announcements and specific requirements. Helps develop time lines for proposal production. Identifies, reviews and summarizes relevant material. Gathers CVs and other information on key staff to be included in proposals. Drafts sections of proposals under the direction of senior staff.
Assists researcher in the development of primary data collection instruments (e.g., interview protocols, patient questionnaires) by reviewing instruments used in related studies, identifying standardized and validated questions, organizing questions into logical groups, etc. Drafts reports summarizing research, applicable trends and policies. Develops tables, charts, and graphs for inclusion in reports.
Prepares budgets and financial reports for current and pending grants and projects (e.g., develops spreadsheets for estimating/tracking expenditures on project personnel, supplies, expert panels, project consultants, etc., and summarizes expected/actual expenditures) under the direction of project managers.
Drafts specifications for construction of analytic variables from the raw data collected on patients and information gathered from other sources.
Performs descriptive analyzes (quantitative or qualitative) of study data (e.g., tabulates data on characteristics of study participants,utilization of home care services, patient status at the end of follow-up period).
Performs accurate data entry, generates simple reports on the contents of databases and brings database capacity and related issues/problems to the attention of project managers.
Performs general office duties (i.e., filing, photocopying, taking minutes of meetings, coordinating conference/meeting logistics).Performs other duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS: Education: Bachelor’s degree in health care,
quantitative, social services, social sciences or related discipline required.
Master’s degree in related discipline with coursework in research
preferred.Experience: Minimum of two years experience in a health, policy
or research related setting. (An equivalent combination of education
will also be considered, i.e., Master’s degree completed or near
completion) required. Effective oral/written communication skills required.
Proficient with personal computers, including Microsoft Word, Excel,
Access, PowerPoint required. Prior experience with data management
preferred. Experience conducting in-person and telephone interviews,
and/or focus groups preferred. Working knowledge of statistical software
programs (e.g., SAS, SPSS, Info Epi) preferred.
