The Massachusetts Department of Correction's mission is to promote public safety by incarcerating offenders while providing opportunities for participation in effective programming designed to reduce recidivism.
Duties: *
Tests and counsels inmates on educational needs.
Provides instruction in the areas of English, reading, math, science and social studies.
Provides individualized instruction in the area of pre-GED and GED so that the inmate’s educational needs are assessed and met.
Maintains accurate and up to date records of inmate’s progress and attendance.
Develops appropriate curriculum and study units.
Participates in student recruitment and follow up, participates in staff “student review and placement” meetings with counselor and staff.
Performs related duties as assigned by the school principal.
Sits on various committees to review and develop in-service training, curriculum development, GED changes, etc.
Provides data for counselors regarding student progress and compliance.
Prepares and compiles “good-time” rosters, evaluations, registrations, behavioral objectives check lists, etc.
Prepares applications, registration, notices and lists for GED testing, both pre-test and regular tests, and files all pertinent materials in inmate’s educational folders.
Assists in annual inventory of all school equipment.
Prepares and prioritizes books and supplies order for presentation and justification to principal.
Assist in graduation preparation.
Participates in staff meetings with the principal and other teachers and counselors.
Calls inmates in units and other areas for absenteeism from classes.
Serves on Special Interest Group (SIG) on a monthly basis to review all areas of the GED program as it interferes with correctional education.
Participates in staff development that increases knowledge of correctional issues, correctional education, and current trends in GED instruction.
Performs other related duties, as required.
Comments:
This position is 8 hours/week.
This is a contract position with no benefits; options to renew.

Qualifictions Required At Hire (list knowledge, skills, abilities):
Massachusetts Teacher Certification.
Knowledge of principles, methods, and practices in education.
Working knowledge of tests and measurements.
Ability to work with inmates, teaching staff and administration
Qualifications Acquired On Job (list knowledge, skills, abilities)
Knowledge of institution schedules and procedures.
Ability to use individualized approach to educational instruction.
Ability to teach a “delinquent” adult population.
Knowledge of principles and practices in correctional education
Language Requirements:
