JOB POSTING
Job Title: Bilingual Composition Proofreader
Shift:
4 days per week, 40 hours as follows:
Friday 22:00 to 06:30 (8.5 hours including 30 min lunch)
Saturday 18:00 to 07:00 (13 hours including two 30 min breaks)
Sunday 18:00 to 07:00 (13 hours including two 30 min breaks)
Monday 22:00 to 06:30 (8.5 hours including 30 min lunch)
Location: North York
Reports to: Composition Assistant Manager
Summary
A proofreader reads pages of typeset (output) for spelling, punctuation, format, style, spacing and font accuracy against customers’ copy.
Key job responsibilities
• Check our output against the customers’ document for style, composition and spelling accuracy and consistency.
• Recheck corrections to assure they have all been done accurately.
• Ensure job instructions are met as per customers’ and mark-up requirements.
• Query unusual customers’ requests.
• Use spell check tools and dictionaries as necessary.
• Meet all job tracking requirements.
• Perform quality control by checking overall consistency, style and pagination.
• Assist throughout the department as requested, operating related equipment to facilitate workflow.
• Maintain immediate area clean and free of distractions.
• Perform other duties as requested.
Hiring Criteria
• Excellent command of the French and English language.
• Printing, publishing and/or industry-related proofreading experience.
• Must have a thorough knowledge of copy standards, sentence structure, grammar, spelling, punctuation and composition.
• Work well under tight deadlines.
• Precise attention to detail.
Assets
• Previous proofreading in a legal environment.
• German language skills is a strong assets; other languages may be good assets as well.
• Able to follow mark-up instructions and utilize Bowne’s mark-up standard as needed.
• Knowledge of MS Word.
• Customer Service skills.
Effort
• Job tasks require use of some concentration and attentiveness, attention to detail and interpreting information on a computer screen (proofreading pages of typeset for spelling, punctuation, format, style, spacing and font).
• May be sitting for long periods of time.
Working Conditions
• Some exposure to deadlines, dealing with multiple demands, some shift work and lack of privacy.
• Mostly works in a pleasant office environment.
* Please note that you will be offered a job on one of these shifts until you are trained and have gained some experience and may be moved to another shift thereafter. Also please note that training, which will take 2-3 weeks, may be conducted on different shifts.
