An Internet Service Provider running on Fiber throughout the Houston area is in need of a Director of Technology to manage the strategic planning and design of its internal and external telecommunication systems.
This position manages other members of the IT staff, including the data department operating the Metropolitan Area Network, Local Area Network and the VoIP technical personnel, to ensure that telecommunications solutions meet company needs. Develops, plans, and implements the overall strategic goals of an organization's network system. Evaluates and recommends changes to current and future network requirements to meet the organization's needs. Plans, directs, and is responsible for the overall performance of network traffic. Assesses the network's current and future needs
Job Requirements
- Must have at least eight (8) years experience and/or a bachelor’s degree in a technical area of specialty or related field
- Relies on extensive technical and management experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
- Working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Demonstrated willingness to lead, teach and share knowledge
- Knowledge of a variety of IT field concepts, including Metropolitan Area Network design and engineering concepts, hardware and relevant monitoring software
- Must have experience in design and operation of enterprise Ethernet-based networks
- Experience in management of a group of exempt and nonexempt technical staff
- Must be willing to work flexible schedule, including nights and weekends
Duties and Responsibilities
- Establishes, plans, and administers the overall policies and goals for the information technology department. Analyzes the needs of departments and establishes priorities for network design and implementation to develop new and/or modify the company's IT network systems.
- Evaluates and implements information systems administrative procedures and maintains documentation that covers the functional operation of the data department, LAN department, and VoIP technical department, including training, coordination and scheduling, data security administration, etc.
- Coordinates all IT projects and ensures company resources are utilized appropriately. Compiles project status reports, coordinates IT project schedules, manages IT project meetings, and identifies and resolves technical problems. Identifies and analyzes systems requirements and defines project scope, requirements, and deliverables. Manages project activities and ensures all project phases and system designs are documented appropriately. Sets deadlines, assigns responsibilities, and monitors and summarizes progress of projects. Prepares reports for upper management regarding status of projects.
- Evaluates, determines and makes recommendations based on need for new products and systems based on budget, client needs, and improvements in technology. May work closely with several functional areas in an organization to ensure that the network is meeting the expectations of clients
- Oversees the evaluation and selection of IT vendors as well as the negotiation of purchase contracts or service level agreements. Handles problems with vendors or products as necessary.
- Determines quality levels for network transmission and performance and ensures levels are met. Defines and implements IT quality assurance practices and procedures.
- Responsible for designing or approving architecture on both an enterprise and internal network level. Defines system and application architecture and provides vision, problem anticipation, and problem solving ability within the organization.
- Directs and oversees operational aspects of the organization's technical infrastructure. Monitors accessibility of applications or services. Oversees implementation and maintenance of enterprise-wide system tools and ensures scalability. Establishes and approves operating policies to mitigate risk. Determines and recommends improvements in current risk management controls and implementation of system changes or upgrades.
- Provides technical leadership, including conducting technical presentation and consultations serving our enterprise customers.
- Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.
