Oversee the design and construction of a new pilot plant facility to be located in Research Triangle Park, NC. This position will lead the design and construction of pilot and future large scale systems for bioprocessing, recovery and protein purification. Current plans include a Pilot Facility (5 kg capacity, roughly 15,000 ft2) and a Launch Facility (at least 50 kg capacity) , both capable of supplying Ph. III clinical and commercial quality purified API.
Direct a team of engineers responsible for all engineering activities. Utilize your expertise in facility engineering/site maintenance, process engineering and project engineering for all corporate capital project programs.
The Senior Director of Engineering will also be responsible the maintenance, calibration, space planning and the infrastructure of the existing manufacturing facility. In addition, expense budget control, budgeting and tracking cost to budget of capital projects and the management of engineering, construction and validation contractors. The incumbent will also be responsible for technology transfer for equipment and facility-related aspects to corporate partners.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Complete hiring of engineers for the department.
Design and prototype large-scale GMP upstream bioproduction (e.G., BioPipeStack and disposable bag), recovery (e.G., tissue homogenization) and purification (e.G., protein A capture) systems.
Design a build out to maximize GLP bioproduction/development space and optimize GMP capacity and flow. Complete build out to defined budget and time frame.
Design Pilot and Launch Facilities. Complete build out to defined budget and time frame.
Assure adequate facility space and infrastructure in all sites to accommodate staff and the diverse staff functions.
Carry out technology transfer of equipment/facility aspects to corporate partners as needed.
Assist the SVP of Operations in presenting facilities and technology to partners, customers and investors.
Develop individual yearly goals and evaluate performance relative to individual milestones, job description, employee advancement and professional development, and company policies concerning safety, security, confidentiality and equal opportunity of all employees within the Engineering department.
Insure that contractors have adequate safety training policies and that they warrant their observance of same.
Full maintenance and facility operations responsibility for all manufacturing and administrative sites.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Hiring, training and supervision of process, project and facility engineers as well as technicians.
